Mt. Lakes tops West Morris; Chatham boys fall

Ryan Frawley scored four goals and Brendan Monteleone fired a hat trick to lift Mountain Lakes to a 13-5 triumph over West Morris in the quarterfinals of the boys lacrosse Tournament of Champions at Basilone Field in Bridgewater on Saturday.

Jake Spagnola tallied twice and Cade Siddron, Chet Morgis, Ian Graham an Trevor Benedetto added goals for the Lakers. Mountain Lakes, the Group I champions, plays rival Delbarton in the Tournament of Champions Semifinals on Wednesday at Kean University in Union.

West Morris, the Group III champions, received four goals by Kyle Skurchak and a solo score by Cole Draghi. Cooper Sloan had two assists for the Wolfpack. West Morris finished its season at 19-6.

Even though the Lakers pulled the sixth seed, they led from beginning to end.

Mountain Lakes led 4-2 at the half and scored three consecutive third quarter goals to build a commanding five-goal margin.

Pingry, 10, Chatham 8

Jamie Zusi’s strong face-off work and a big fourth-quarter effort lifted the Big Blue past the Cougars in T of C Quarterfinal round action. Thomas Zusi had a hat trick and George Enman and Jake Moss had two goals each for Pingry. The Big Blue advanced to play top-seeded Bridgewater-Raritan in Wednesday’s semifinals.

Austin Pierce fired a hat trick and Mac Bredahl scored twice for the fifth-seeded Cougars. Connor Byrd, Ryan Decker and Justin Hayes added goals for Chatham (19-7).

A fourth-quarter Pingry run proved to decided the game. Consecutive scores by Ben Shepard, Jami Zusi and Enman gave the Big Blue a 10-6 advantage with 10:08 remaining in the game.

Zusi’s score was a special momentum builder since it came off the draw. Zusi’s won several face-offs which helped Pingry keep possession of the ball and control the game.
