Morris County boys rule; locals capture four titles


It was a terrific day for Morris County boys lacrosse as Mountain Lakes, Chatham, West Morris and Delbarton captured four of the six state titles played on Wednesday. Bridgewater-Raritan in Group IV and Pingry in Non-Public B were the only non-Morris County teams to take home the hardware.

Mountain Lakes 7, Madison 2

Jake Spagnola fired a hat trick and Trevor Benedetto, Jimmy Schicke, Chad Morgis and Cade Siddron added goals in Mountain Lakes’ win over Madison in the Group I title game held at Livingston.

The game was tied at 1-1 when Spagnola and Schicke scored back-to-back goals in a 10-second span during the second quarter. It helped give the Lakers a 3-1 halftime advantage. They would build a 5-goal advantage before Madison connected again. The win lifts Mountain Lakes to 17-6.

Ian Waresk scored twice for the Dodgers. Madison finished at 14-7.

West Morris 8, Moorestown 7

Ryan Antonelle’s goal with 4.3 seconds left in regulation lifted the Wolfpack to a Group III title in a game at Cherokee High School in Marlton.

Cooper Sloan had two goals and three assists and Garrett Izzo and Kyle Skurchak added goals. West Morris rallied from a 5-2 halftime deficit to earn the title.

Ryan Pruss scored three goals including a game-tying score with 4:20 left in regulation to make it 7-7. The Wolfpack has won 14 of their last 15 games.

Delbarton 15, Bergen Catholic 5

Revenge for last year was a prime motivator for the Green Wave in gaining their Non-Public A title in a game in Pennington.

Rory Madigan had three goals and five assists and Delbarton got two-goal games from Colin Crowley, Keeghan Khan, Rutter, Garrett Samuelson and Tom Schilling.

The Green Wave scored six first-quarter goals including back-to-back scores by Jack Kielty and Michael Rutter in a span of 13 seconds. Delbarton led 6-2 at the half and 10-5 after three quarters before putting it away.   

Chatham 4, Manasquan 2

The Cougars won the Group II title in a low-scoring contest played in neutral-sited Livingston. It is their third state title in five years and their first since 2013. Mac Bredahl had two goals and two assists and Matt Coleman and Austin Pierce had solo scores. Pierce’s was the game-winner with 5:45 left in the third period to make it a 3-2 game.

Goalkeeper Matt Nestler stopped eight shots for defensive-minded Chatham.

Girls Lacrosse

Oak Knoll 15, Mountain Lakes 9

The Royals stunned the Lakers in North Group I behind a season-high, 8-goal performance by Annabelle Zebrowski. Grainger Rosati had four goals and two assists and Sarah Bedard had a hat trick for the Lakers 18-3. Mountain Lakes defeated Oak Knoll 8-3 on April 29.

Summit 14, Chatham 5

Zoe Kraus had three goals and Bridget Ballard had three assists for the Cougars in the North III final. Emily DeKeyzer an Abby Morgan also connected for the Cougars. Summit led 5-3 at halftime and broke the game open in the second half. Chatham finishes its season at 15-6.
