Sticks soar for Morris County boys lacrosse; Everyone wins


Nate Carson’s double overtime goal lifted Chatham to a 6-5 victory over Ramapo in boys lacrosse action on Saturday.

It was Morris County’s best showing in years as every team that played won their game. Four titles were won in all including two in Group I

Chatham’s title came in Group II. Carson’s goal came 44 seconds into the second overtime to give the Cougars their first title since 2013. Chatham plays Moorestown in the Group III final on Wednesday.

Austin Pierce scored four goals and Mac Bredahl had a goal and three assists and Matt Coleman added a goal and an assist.

The Cougars rallied from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game. Pierce’s final score came late in the third quarter to tie the game at 5-all. The fourth quarter and first overtime were scoreless.

Madison 6, Bernards 5, OT

Justin Dalena scored with 56 seconds left in overtime to lift the Dodgers to victory in the South I title game.

The win gave the Dodgers their first state title in the history of the lacrosse program. Madison rallied from a 4-2 third-quarter deficit. Pat Grahling scored twice and Will Anton, Ian Waresk and Ryan Schmitz also netted scores. Schmitz, a sophomore, tied the game on a score with two minutes remaining. Madison advances to play Mountain Lakes in the Group I final on Wednesday.

Mountain Lakes 13, Caldwell 7

Ryan Frawley had two goals and five assists to spark the Lakers to the North Group I title. The Lakers scored seven second-quarter goals to build a 10-3 halftime advantage. Brendan Monteleone scored five goals and Chet Morgis and Will Pirolo had two goals apiece for the Lakers.

West Morris 6, Northern Highlands 4

Junior Garrett Izzo fired a hat trick and Ryan Antonelle, Ryan Pruss and Kyle Skurchak added goals to lift the Wolfpack to the North Group III title. West Morris built a 5-0 halftime lead and deflected a late rally to grab the title. Goalkeeper Joe Reilly stopped seven shots. It was the Wolfpack’s third trip to the sectional finals in the last four years. It was their first sectional title since 2008. West Morris advanced to play Moorestown in the Group III final on Wednesday.

Delbarton 10, St. Augustine Prep 6

Rory Madigan and Colin Crowley scored two goals apiece to pace the Green Wave in Non-Publc A semifinal round action. Delbarton rallied from a 4-3 halftime deficit. Keeghan Khan and Jack Chatwin also had two goal games and Tom Schilling also connected. The Green Wave plays Bergen Catholic in Wednesday’s final.
