Mountain Lakes boys dominate in T of C quarterfinals

Senior attackman Christian Cuccinello scored six goals and Brad Smith had four goals and three assists to lift Mountain Lakes to a 13-6 victory over Westfield in the quarterfinal round of the Tournament of Champions on Saturday.

Sophomore Ryan Frawley also notched a pair of goals for the Lakers.

After a 1-1 first quarter, Mountain Lakes took control with five consecutive second-quarter goals to take a 6-1 advantage at the half.

Mountain Lakes, the third-seeded team, will face second-seeded Summit which enjoyed a quarterfinal round bye. The game is scheduled to be played at Bridgewater-Raritan on Wednesday.

Mountain Lakes goalies Kevin Beimfohr and Paul Kimmelman shared five saves. The Mountain Lakes defense performed well despite losing standout defender John Spagnola to an ankle/leg injury early in the contest.

Chris Aslanian and Luke Prybylsky had two goals apiece for the sixth-seeded Blue Devils.

Smith, a junior attackman, went over 100 points in his varsity career. His first goal tied the game at 1-all and triggered a 9-0 scoring run for the Lakers.

Cuccinello contributed by scoring four consecutive second-quarter goals. Westfield tried to rally late but could not trim its deficit under seven goals.
