Mt. Lakes, Delbarton, Morristown, Mo-Beard advance in states


Senior attackman Christian Cuccinello and sophomore attackman Ryan Frawley fired hat tricks to lift Mountain Lakes to an 8-4 triumph over West Essex in North I state tournament boys lacrosse semifinal round action on Thursday.

Brad Smith added a goal and an assist and Chet Morgis contributed a goal for the Lakers. Mountain Lakes led 4-1 at the half and only once did West Essex cut it to a two-goal deficit. Mountain Lakes hosts Glen Ridge in the sectional final.

Glen Ridge 5, Kinnelon 4

Jackson Kinley scored with 14 seconds left to lift the Ridgers in a wild game that included an 80-minute lightning delay and a fourth quarter which produced seven of the game’s nine goals.

Joe Neggia scored twice and Michael Elefonte and John Belanger had goals for the Colts. A Neggia goal in which he picked up a ground ball off a lengthy scrum and fired it into the net gave Kinnelon a 4-2 lead with 6:01 left in the game. Glen Ridge rallied with three consecutive goals and then smothered Kinnelon’s final scoring chance as time ran out.

Group III

Morristown 14, Randolph 2

Brad Greik scored five goals to spark the Colonials in North semifinal round action.

Dan Delargy fired a hat trick and dealt two assists and Brian Begley had three goals and one assist. Joey Murphy had one goal and three assists for the seventh-seeded team.

Morristown scored the first four goals and led 7-1 at the half. Morristown plays top-seeded Ridgewood in the sectional final. J. P. Southren and Jake Southren connected for 11th-seeded Randolph.

Ridgewood 11, Mendham 4

The Maroons led 3-2 at halftime and pulled away with a 5-1 third-quarter effort. The Minutemen finish the season at (10-9).

Non Public A

Delbarton 8, St. Joseph’s (Montvale) 4

Connor Mackie fired a hat trick and Jordan Dowiak connected twice to lift the Green Wave in quarterfinal round action. J. J. McBride, T. J. Comizio and Emmett Cordrey also connected for Delbarton. Stephen Kovalsky made seven saves for the Morris County champs. Delbarton led 4-1 at the half. The Green Wave faces Seton Hall Prep in the sectional semis. Seton Hall throttled Don Bosco Prep 23-5 on Thursday.

Non Public B

Morristown-Beard 12, Rutgers Prep 10

Teddy Hatfield had three goals and three assists and Thomas Rago fired a hat trick to lift the Crimson in the quarterfinal round. Trevor Baptiste had two goals and three assists and amassed an astounding 28 ground balls. Chris Glancey scored twice and John McDonald had one goal and five assists for Morristown-Beard.

The Crimson led 10-6 at half but Rutgers Prep rallied with three consecutive third-quarter goals. Rago and Hatfield scored goals late to ensure the victory.

The Crimson face Pingry, which defeated Montclair Kimberley 13-5, in the semifinal round.

Group II

Northern Highlands 5, Chatham 4, OT

Holden Rosen-Grupp’s overtime goal doomed the Cougars in a defense-oriented battle.

The Cougars rallied from a 3-2 halftime deficit. Will Barnett, Rich Berger, Evan Bernard, David Gill and Austin Pierce all scored goals for Chatham. Pierce and Gill scored fourth-quarter goals to give the Cougars a brief 4-3 edge. Highlanders Rich Holle tied the game with 1:48 left in regulation and set up the overtime.
