Strong second half lifts Delbarton in MCT title game

FLORHAM PARK — Will McCarthy fired a hat trick and goalkeeper Stephen Kovalsky put in a stellar performance to lift Delbarton to an 11-4 triumph over Mountain Lakes in the Morris County Tournament Boys Lacrosse Championship on Tuesday on the turf at FDU-Florham.

Kovalsky stopped eight shots to earn MVP honors. J. J. McBride, Jordan Dowiak and Conor Mackie added two goals apiece and Emmett Cordrey dealt three assists for the top-seeded defending champions. The victory lifted Delbarton to 14-2 on the season including two victories against the Lakers. The win also lifts Delbarton’s MCT title count to 13 which is one more than its rivals at Mountain Lakes for the 27-year-old tournament.

Brad Smith scored twice and Zach Lesko and Chris Sammarro added goals for the Lakers. Zander Kotsen added two assists for the second-seeded Mountain Lakes (16-3) which returned to the title game after a year’s hiatus.

“It feels great,” Kovalsky said. “Last year it was nice to win but this year was our senior year. It was good to win it again.”

The Delbarton keeper considered his MVP award a team honor and praised his offensive teammates as much as his defensive ones.

“It really boiled down to the offense having good possessions,” Kovalsky said. “They possessed the ball really well. It was a great team effort.”

The contest was tied 3-3 midway through the second quarter. The Green Wave then rattled off seven consecutive goals reaching into the fourth quarter.

Back-to-back goals by McBride and McCarthy made it a 5-3 game at the half. McCarthy who teamed up with Cordrey to score with 24 seconds left in the second quarter. Connected again with his teammate to keep the goal string going midway through the third quarter.

Consistent face-off wins by Delbarton led to patient possessions that kept the Green Wave momentum going on offense and tired the Lakers defense. They pulled away in the third quarter with four consecutive scores and outscored the Lakers 6-1 in the second half.
