Mendham’s Salerno, ML’s Perry selected All-American


Mendham’s Mariah Salerno and Mountain Lakes’ Jackie Perry were selected 2013 All-Americans when the national list was revealed by in mid-June.

Selections from the North also included Samantha Brown of Ridge, Claire Cagnassola of Oak Knoll, Stuart Humphrey of Summit and Erica Perrotta of West Essex.

South Jersey was represented by Bridget Curran of Rumson, Gina Fuller of Red Bank, Olivia Harpel of West Windsor North, Megan Kelly of Moorestown, Emilia Lopez-Ona of Princeton, Maria McCool of Moorestown, Alexandria Moore of Allentown and Shannon Nugent of Medford.

Salerno, a senior who seemed to be everywhere on the field for the Minutemen, will be attending Villanova in the fall. She finished with 22 goals and four assists for Mendham.

“She’s very determined,’’ said Mendham coach Jessica Shoulberg about Salerno after an Morris Count Tournament win against Chatham. “She does everything we ask her to do. A lot of the seniors are the same way. It’s kind of a contagious energy that she creates on the field.’

“There are days when she is the most lethal scorer on the field. There are other days when she doesn’t attempt a shot.’’

Mendham put together a sensational 15-6 record against tough competition another sectional title. Mendham advanced to the Group III final before losing to eventual champion Moorestown.

Perry will be back with the Lakers for her senior season. The outstanding junior was an exceptional scorer. She had 64 goals and 12 assists. She helped the Mountain Lakes to its first Morris County Tournament title in years. She scored 19 goals in state tournament play. The Lakers finished with an 19-2 record, a sectional title and an appearance in the Group I final against Oak Knoll.

Honorable Mention All Americans included Mountain Lakes defender Sarah Bozzo, who will be attending Franklin & Marshall in the fall and Chatham midfielder Lauren Maiorano who will continue her lacrosse career at Dartmouth.
