Gibbs showcases complete lacrosse season

MADISON – Stephan Pappas of Allentown was a late addition to the Gill Gibbs All-Star Senior Classic. As it turned out, he made all the difference.

Pappas connected off a pass from Delbarton’s Kevin Lewis with 1:12 left in overtime to lift the Cayuga Team to a 16-15 victory over Seneca in the first of two senior showcases held on the Madison High turf on Sunday.

The games were part of the lacrosse festival which officially ends the scholastic season for the Garden State. Jeff George of Watchung Hills fired a hat trick including the game-tying goal with 13 seconds left in regulation. Pappas, Tucker James of Bergen Catholic and Brady Wultzer of Don Bosco Prep also scored two goals apiece. Delbarton midfielder Austin Williams and defenseman Will Reynolds represented Morris County for Cayuga. Williams won a draw and ran in for a score to tie the game 10-10 with 31 seconds left in the third quarter. There were five ties and two lead changes in the fourth quarter of the entertaining showcase contest.

Onondaga 14, Mohawk 9

Josh Reinson of Montgomery score four goals and Jack Cunningham of Scotch Plains and Conor Krup of Ramapo fired hat tricks for Onondaga which pulled ahead late in the third quarter. Onondaga scorers included Madison’s Collin Scarpello, who connected on the final goal on his home field. Mount Olive’s Chris Sanchez added an assist for Onondaga.

Millburn’s Max Newerow scored three times for Mohawk. Chatham’s Christof Strunc, Montville’s Jake Haimson and Mendham’s Tim Lewis scored goals for Mohawk. Mountain Lakes’ goalkeeper Jared Bernstein put in a strong performance between the pipes and Chatham face-off specialist Trip Connors was active on the circle.

Other players representing Morris County include: attackman Sam Carson, defenseman Will Weichert and Chris Peters and goalkeeper Robbie Coe of Chatham, Mount Olive’s Eric Weiss, Mountain Lakes’ midfielder Sam Walsh and defensemen Mike Sammarro and Evan Bernstein.
