U.S. advances to Under-19 title game


St. Augustine Prep standout Steven Pontrello scored five goals to lift the U.S. Team to a 12-7 triumph over the Native American Indian nation of Iroquois in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 World Championships on Thursday in Turko, Finland.

Pontrello scored three of his goals to start the second half and help the U.S. Team build a 9-5 advantage midway through the third quarter. The national team also had some help from former Bridgewater-Raritan standout Tyler Barbarich. The former Panthers’ midfielder won 9 of 12 faceoffs for the U.S. Team which captured 16 of 22 in total.

Matt Kavanaugh added two goals and two assists and Ryan Tucker had two goals and one assist for the national squad. Randall Staats fired a hat trick for Iroquois which defeated the U.S. Team 15-13 in pool play on Tuesday. The U.S. faces Canada, a 15-4 winner over England, in Saturday’s final. The U.S. is 6-0 in championship games, winning every title since the event began in 1988.
