U.S. dominates Germany; prepares for Iroquois


Matt Kavanaugh and Connor Buczek scored four goals apiece to lift the U.S.National Team to a 22-2 triumph over Germany in the quarterfinal round of the Under-19 World Championships in Turku, Finland on Wednesday.

Kavanaugh added two assists and Kyle Keenan had two goals and two assists for the U.S. Team. The triumph sets up a rematch for the national squad against the Iroquois team in Thursday’s semifinal. The Iroquois shocked the U.S. 15-13 on Tuesday in the final game of pool play.

The U.S. Team left no doubts in their romp over Germany. The national squad burst to a 9-1 advantage and the half and then scored 13 of the next 14 goals to cement the victory.

Tuesday’s loss forced the U.S. to play in the quarterfinal round while Iroquois could enjoy the bye. The Native American  indian nation’s triumph was a first against the U.S. squad in outdoor lacrosse, although they have registered triumphs in indoor events. Hank DeLisle, Brendan Bomberry and Randall Staats registered hat tricks to help Iroquois finish 3-1 in pool play.

The loss dropped the U.S. to 2-2 in the pool. Matt Kavanaugh and Mike Tagliaferri scored four goals apiece for the national team.
