Delbarton’s stunning rally captures Non Public A title

The Delbarton boys lacrosse team scored five unanswered goals including four in a span of 1:48 to stun Don Bosco Prep 8-7 in overtime and capture the Non Public A state title in a contest at the Livingston High turf on Wednesday.

Senior midfielder John Shaffer notched the game-winner with 2:45 left in the overtime period. The win gave Delbarton it’s second consecutive Non Public A title and sixth in the last seven years. Connor Bilby had two goals and two assists including the game tying goal with 13 seconds left in regulation.

Alex Henthorn and Jack Ray had two goals apiece for Don Bosco Prep which was top ranked and 18-0 going into the contest. After a 3-3 halftime score, Don Bosco Prep built a 6-3 advantage going into the final period. Marc Buerman connected with 3:32 left in the game to give DBP a commanding 7-3 edge.

Delbarton faceoff standout Austin Williams won 13 of 18 draws, but captured 5 of 6 in the fourth quarter which added fuel to the Green Wave offensive barrage. Delbarton rallied with scores from Jordan Dowiak (at 1:48), Sean Donnelly off a Kevin Lewis assist, Lewis with 27 seconds left and Bilby with just 13 seconds to send the remarkable contest into overtime.

Delbarton goalie John Schissler had five saves including one in the overtime period for the Green Wave. Delbarton advances to the Tournament of Champions which will start with quarterfinal round play on Saturday at Basilone Field in Bridgewater.
