Mendham boys survive Holmdel rally; Chatham, Mountain Lakes advance

Will Robinson had four goals and three assists and Jeff Morris added a goal and two assists to lift West Morris to a 9-8 victory in Group II boys lacrosse state tournament play on Tuesday.

Mendham led 5-1 in the first quarter and built a 9-2 halftime lead before Holmdel mounted a second-half rally to get close to tying the game late. The Minutemen will play Chatham in the next round.l

Chatham 14, Jefferson 2

The Cougars took control early with a 9-0 first-quarter run. Sam Carson fired a hat trick and Kyle Howard Johnson and Pat Landy scored two goals apiece in a balanced effort for Chatham.

Group I

Kinnelon 14, Bernards 8 – Brian Gnad had three goals and five assists, Kobi Frankel had three goals and three assists and Ryan O’Keefe also had a hat trick for the Colts.

Mountain Lakes 11, Madison 6 — In a wild contest, the Lakers pulled away from a 5-5 tie with a six goal outburst in the fourth quarter. Eric Dircks paced Mountain Lakes with four goals. Michael Clemente fired a hat trick for the Dodgers.

Mendham’s Peter McNerney (9) is looking to feed during first-quarter action. The Minutemen scored five of the first six goals on Tuesday.

Group III

Morristown 11, West Windsor South 4 — Brad Hersh had five goals and one assist and Stephen DeLargey connected four times for the Colonials. Morristown hosts Wayne Valley in the next round.

West Morris 18, Monroe 6 – The Wolfpack took control with an eight-goal first quarter. Joe DeBiasse scored four goals and Jeremy Angle and Jason Mackiewicz fired hat tricks for West Morris. The Wolfpack will meet Mount Olive in the next round.

Mount Olive 15, Fair Lawn 1 — Conor Buoye had six goals and two assists and Tyler McEvoy had three goals and three assists to fuel the Marauders’ romp. Mount Olive led 12-1 at the half.

Millburn 13, Montville 8 — Jake Haimson’s five-goal effort wasn’t enough for the Mustangs. Brian McCormack added two goals and three assists for Montville.   

Mendham’s Tim Lewis launches a hard shot in early game action against Holmdel. The Minutemen will travel to face Chatham on Thursday.
