MONTVILLE – Chatham earned the No. 1 seed and defending champion Mendham was selected for the No. 2 seed at the Morris County Tournament Seeding Meeting held on Thursday at Montville High School.

Mountain Lakes and West Morris earned the third and fourth seeds while Morris Knolls, Kinnelon, Montville and Villa Walsh round out the top eight.

The Cougars (10-2) earned honors by defeating Mendham 10-7 on April 13. Jaclyn Leto and Kelsey Perseley are among the key players for Chatham this season. Last year’s MCT Most Valuable Player Ally Messinger and sisters Paige and Devon Russell are among the Minutemen (8-3) standouts to watch.

There were a number of squads that had better records than the top seeds. Sixth-seeded Kinnelon (9-1), 11th seeded Mount Olive (9-0), 12th-seeded Randolph (8-1) and 14th seeded Pequannock (8-1), but the coaches made allowances for strength of schedule in determining the seedings.

This is the first year that the tournament is being compacted into a 9-day event. Play begins on May 3 with four preliminary round contests in the 19-team tournament. Opening round begins on May 5 and quarterfinal round action on May 8 both at the site of the higher seeded team. The lacrosse coaches voted to play semifinal round games at the higher seeds on May 10 rather than compete in a night-time doubleheader at Roxbury High School. The final is scheduled for May 12 in a 7 p.m. start at Roxbury High School.

Mendham defeated Chatham15-11 in last year’s title game.
