Delbarton earns No. 1 seed in Morris County Tournament

WASHINGTON TWP. (Morris) – The Delbarton School lacrosse team was selected the top seed during the Morris County Tournament Boys Lacrosse seeding meeting held on Monday night at West Morris Central High School.

After a tie forced a runoff vote, Chatham (7-2) was chosen second, MountainLakes (7-2) was selected third and unbeaten Morristown (8-0) rounded out the top four seeds in this year’s tournament.

Last year’s champion Kinnelon (3-6) was selected fifth while Mendham (3-6), Mount Olive (6-1) and last year’s finalist Madison (3-6) filled in the top eight teams.

Play begins on Saturday with four preliminary games. Opening round contests must be played by Tuesday, May 3 and quarterfinals by Thursday, May 5. The semifinals will be played back to back on Saturday, May 7 at Madison High Schoolat times to be determined. The title game is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10 at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham in a 7:30 p.m. start.

Delbarton (6-2) is unbeaten so far this season among New Jerseyand Morris County opponents, however the Green Wave is scheduled to playMountain Lakes on Thursday in the annual regular-season contest between traditional Morris County powers. Chatham edged Mountain Lakes for the second spot in a runoff after the two teams were tied in the initial voting. Morristown’s fourth seed and Mount Olive’s seventh seed are considered to be the highest rankings those boys lacrosse programs have ever received since the inception of the tournament.

Last year, Kinnelon defeated Madison 9-4 in the first MCT final in the 23-year history of the tournament that did not include either Delbarton or Mountain Lakes in the title game.

Play begins with four preliminary games on Saturday morning. The times listed are tentative, pending the approval of the school’s athletic directors. No. 20 Morris Catholic will play at No. 13 Pequannock (TBA), No. 19 Boonton plays at No. 14 Jefferson (11 a.m.), No. 18 Park Regional plays at No. 15 Morris Knolls (10 a.m.) and No. 17 Morris Hills travels to No. 16 Roxbury (11 a.m.).

Winner of No. 17 Morris Hills (3-3) at No. 16 Roxbury (4-4) plays at No. 1 Delbarton (6-2).

No. 9 West Morris (3-6) plays at No. 8 Madison (3-6).

No. 12 Randolph (2-4) plays at No. 5 Kinnelon (3-6).

Winner of No. 20 Morris Catholic (1-8) at No. 13 Pequannock (6-1) plays at No. 4 Morristown (8-0).

Lower bracket

Winner of No. 19 Boonton (2-6) at No. 14 Jefferson (4-5) plays at No. 3 Mountain Lakes (7-2).

No. 11 Morristown–Beard (2-4) plays at No. 6 Mendham (3-6).

No. 10 Montville (5-5) plays at No. 7 Mount Olive (6-1).

Winner of No. 18 Park Regional (3-5) at No. 15 Morris Knolls (4-4) plays at No. 2 Chatham (7-2).
